Our first Maritime snowstorm

Wednesday was another dark and dreary late fall day here in Nova Scotia. The kids were excited about a few flakes that were falling and hoped there would be more. We worked away at some school work ( I have been lazy recently and they ahev been slacking -not good!) in the morning and just after lunch, I went to get the mail at the end of our road. It got very dark, and was already very windy. It was really gloomy out. And then it started to really snow. And blow. And I think I mentioned it snow...

Devin couldn't wait to get out in teh snow, but soon realized he would need a coat if he intended to do this much more

After supper, the power went out at around 6:45. I crawled upstairs trying to remember where I had the flashlight, as it is usually by my bed, but someone had moved it. Thankfully I already had candles lit, and we are using some of the battery operated tealights, which are great, btw! We even use them as nightlights when someone is scared of the dark.. and I don't mean me - it is my 6 year old! We enjoyed playing games by candlelight and I was working on stiching a sampler for a friend. Here is an important thing to remember - when there is a power failure and you are working by one candle like Caroline Ingalls, you cannot tell the difference from flourescent yellow thread and white thread!! Don't forget that! Oh yes, and also - fill the bathtub with water when it is stormy so you can still flush the toilets. Having lived with town water all my life, I forgot this!

Mike called from work saying he needed to back to work again at 2:00 AM for some problem with camera monitoring. So he decided to stay at work, and I decided to pray to not have a panic attack again. My pastor called, he lives just up the road, and he offered to come by if we needed anything, he is such a nice man!

The power was restored at about 10:45, and the kids were just getting to bed. The wind was just howling outside, and it was hard getting to sleep not knowing when Mike would get home. He arrived safe and sound, and had a long sleep in for most of the morning! Until Robyn and I went for a hike and found our property markers, at which point we had to get him up, or we wouldn't remember where they were!

We had just enough snow to keep things interesting for the kids, and they had a great time outside. I ventured out later in the day and collected pine and fir branches to put in my pot by the front door ( pictures on next post)and managed to not get impaled on the holly branches. The great thing about living here now is that we have lots of pine and fir trees for holiday decorating and we can cut down our very own tree this year!
